When working with children with issues mentioned above, we have a very creative and unique approach that not only supports the child but also empowers parents by giving them the tools they need to help their child. Our methods at Whole HeARTs were developed by therapist, Anya ADHD-SensoryProcessing-Denver-Child-TherapyBeebe, who has had over 13 years of experience working with children with sensory and attention issues, and people with autism and Asperger’s disorder. She also knows first-hand what it is like to have ADD and how to overcome distractions.

In our individual sessions, your child will learn a variety of techniques to help him or her with their specific issues. For example, your child may learn new skills regarding how to stay focused, keep on task, listen to and follow directions, get organized and be responsible at home and at school. These concepts are reinforced using art therapy techniques and visual imagery to create “anchors” (symbols that remind us of the concept, coping tool or technique learned). Children, as well as adults, tend to remember images quicker and better than they remember verbal instructions and we utilize this to create positive change. When children create meaningful images linked to creating a new behavior pattern, these images then tend to anchor behavior changes in a faster, longer lasting way. We have found that this works especially well with children who may have a hard time remembering what they are supposed to do in a certain situation or children who have a hard time understanding and appropriately expressing their feelings.

At the end of every session, we bring parents in to teach them what the child learned so that they can better reinforce new techniques at home. At Whole HeARTs, we believe in transferring the skills taught to parents so that parents can understand better how to help their child. This also promotes the likelihood of shorter term therapy.
