From the television show “Friends” to the song “You Have A Friend In Me,” friendship is a popular theme and maybe for an important reason. Having a good friend or friends can be of big benefit. Here are just a few benefits:

  • You have someone to celebrate good times with.
  • You have someone who can provide support during bad times.
  • Having a friend can help prevent loneliness and in return gives you a chance to offer needed companionship.
  • Your sense of belonging and purpose increases.
  • Your happiness levels increase.
  • Friends can help reduce stress and even help cope with stress.
  • May help boost self-confidence and self-worth.
  • You have someone to help you cope with life traumas.
  • Friends can even provide encouragement to change or avoid unhealthy lifestyle habits.

Friends may even have benefits later in life by helping to expand your life expectancy. The thought behind this came from research conducted by the Centre for Ageing Studies at Flinders University. The hypothesis behind this thought you have already read about above. What the study hypothesized is that good friendships discourage unhealthy behaviors and the companionship may help ward off depression, boost self-esteem, and provide support.

So next time your with a friend let that person know how thankful you that he or she in your life.
